Two critical bills have hearings scheduled for Monday, May 1st:

LD 1770 An Act to Improve Pesticides Sales and Use Data Collection and Accessibility by the State – Osher

This bill is Representative Osher’s second attempt to make pesticide sales and use public.  The bill directs the Board of Pesticides Control to create and administer an online database of pesticide product dealers, certified applicators, and commercial agricultural producers reporting the type and amount of pesticides sold, distributed, or applied in Maine and other information as required. The bill increases record-keeping requirements and specifies that information submitted to the board is public information. The bill also requires the board to report annually to the joint standing committees of ACF, HHS, ENR, and IDEA on the developments and progress made in carrying out the state policy of minimizing the use of pesticides and gives those committees authority to report out legislation related to the report.

We are strongly opposed to this bill for the burdensome reporting requirements, the potential violations of confidential business information, and the lack of oversight of how the data would be used by the public.

LD 1563 An Act to Allow a Resident of Agricultural Land to Enlist License Holders to Hunt on the Land – Pluecker

Representative Pluecker has worked with Maine Farm Bureau to create a bill that would expand the ability of landowners tokill nuisance animals or wild turkeys. This bill expands the ability of farmers to designate anyone with a valid hunting license to take nuisance animals without needing prior permission from a game warden.
