NEWS & UPDATES March 3, 2026

January Webinars Garner Broad Audience

In January 2026, RCTB hosted two free webinars — “Filling research gaps to improve the management of Phytophthora root rot” and “Christmas tree genetic improvement through identification of stress defense mechanisms.” A total of 350 growers either attended the live sessions or watched the recorded versions. The growers represented 32 U.S. states and 5 Canadian provinces.

According to follow up surveys, 90% reported they gained knowledge from the genetic improvement webinar and another 86% found the information understandable. The majority (72%) of respondents who viewed the Phytophothora root rot webinar noted they expected to implement change based on the webinar and 97% of them reported a gain in knowledge from the presenter.

RCTB Research Project Showcase

In this issue, we showcase the sixth of six RCTB-funded research projects for the upcoming year.

Developing Pest Monitoring Tools for Oregon and Washington Christmas Tree Farms — Oregon State University – Dr. Priya Rajarapu

Although insect pests are frequently managed in Christmas tree farms, there is a lack of a management tool that can reduce the economic burden and environmental concerns associated with the chemical management of insect pests. Current monitoring for insect pests includes scouting for symptoms and damage caused by these pests to decide the timing for spraying. Insect traps can detect the presence of pests before symptoms appear, allowing for early diagnosis of infestations. Insect capture data can be used to predict the occurrence of peak populations which can be used to increase the effectiveness of pesticide application for ecological and economic benefits. The goal of the proposed project is to develop traps for the early detection of insect pests on Christmas trees in Oregon and Washington, enabling accurate pest forecasts through the OPMN and PNW Pest Alert system. The proposed study will result in efficient pest monitoring approaches enabling growers to make informed decisions on pesticide applications.

RCTB Research Topic Survey Available Online

Growers are encouraged to complete the 2026 Research Topic Survey. The information is used by the RCTB Research Committee to help determine which research proposals to fund.

The survey is available at www.realchristmastreeboard.org/research/. Growers may complete the survey online or print the survey and email the completed version to research@realchristmastreeboard.org
