LABOR BILL/S TO ACT ON

The labor bills can greatly affect your business! This is brought to you by FARM BUREAU/AGCOM.

The ag labor bills, LD 398 and 525 have been combined into one amended bill. This is not good. The work session on the proposed amendment will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 1 pm.

During three stakeholder meetings, we raised concerns about small farms not being able to pay minimum wage, the issues with youth workers making $13.80+ (costing more in labor than the income from what they harvest) as a starting point, and the loss of youth jobs as a result, and that many farmers include housing, transportation, and food as part of the compensation package and lower wages reflecting the costs of those amenities. And if we give in on “concerted activity” they will ask for unions next session (as was clearly stated by Thom Harnett at one of the meetings).
