Farmers are getting ready to welcome guests to their farms this weekend (7/26/25 and 7/27/25). This summertime tradition gives visitors a chance to connect with the people and places that make Maine agriculture special.
Planning Your Adventure
Maine’s Open Farm Day is a fun “choose your own adventure” experience. Visitors can spend a day exploring one or several farms. See how farmers care for fruits, vegetables, and perennial plants and crops like Christmas and maple trees. Or learn about farm animal care.
Open Farm Day can be a great way to get tips for your own hobby farm or gardening plans, too. Don’t be shy–ask questions and learn from farmers’ experiences.
If you’re looking for sources of local farm goods, you’ll find plenty of choices. Many sites have farm stands with local foods and gifts available for sale.
Some farms will host pop-up experiences to promote community organizations or neighboring businesses. Wherever you visit, you’ll find something memorable.
From the Farmers
Open Farm Day organizers asked hosts to share their thoughts about what they hope their visitors will learn on this special day. Here are some of the highlights!
“There are so many options for you. Get to know your farmers! There is absolutely something for everyone in Maine!”
— Roebuck’s Angus, Turner
“Maine agriculture is a vast, amazing asset represented in all sizes of farms and products. We hope that we can share how to sustain a small farm business doing what you love.”
— Cape Newagen Alpaca Farm, Southport
“We hope that visitors to our farm will appreciate learning first-hand where and how their local fruits & vegetables are grown.”
Farms are busy places. Visitors will learn there’s something happening year-round related to farming. If you’ve never been to a farm, or if you’re an “Open Farm Day alumnus”, below are a few tips to make the most of your visit:
Dress for the weather and for the outdoors. Comfy shoes, layers, bug spray, hats, etc., are good choices for this rain-or-shine event.
Open Farm Day is a great time to stock up on local farm goods! Remember to pack a cooler and a tote so you can bring home your favorite Open Farm Day goodies.
Be aware of your surroundings. Stick to paths and areas open to guests and follow the signage.
Get to know the hosts. Before you visit, follow farms on social media, sign up for their newsletters, or visit their websites to learn a bit more about the hosts and to stay connected year-round!
After your visit, share your Open Farm Day memories using #RealMaine and take the visitor survey.
